When Security Guards Go Rogue: The Curious Case of the Stationary Security Guard

The Perfect New Guard—Or So It Seemed

One of our clients contacted us recently to share what happened with one of their new hires.

Initial impressions of their new security guard was good, he had decent references, and conducted himself in a way that he was organised, intelligent, and ready to work.
They set him up with the app, and talked him through his patrol route on a map for the particular site he would be visiting, and told him to be there at 21:00 the next day. Everything was looking good so far...

Something Didn’t Quite Add Up…

The control room noticed that he was scanning in at the locations at the right times, perfectly on time. Sounds great right?

But then they looked at the distance between his checkpoint scans.
They should have had at least 100, or in some cases 300 meters between the checkpoints.
Well, the numbers said otherwise. It looked like he was some kind of security statue, Completely stationary, perfectly still, despite “scanning” different locations on the clock.

Suspicious? Very.

Caught in the Act: The Great QR Code Shuffle

When running a route analysis within timeshot.io for this character, it looked like he went on his first patrol just fine. But this person thought it would be a great idea to take a picture of the wall mounted QR codes and then sit in his van and scan them all without having to patrol the site.

Sure, it was warmer in his van, but now the site was left vulnerable, and all his scans were coming through on the same spot, so it was plain as the nose on anyones face, he was trying to cheat the system
Needless to say, his debut patrol was also his last. The system flagged it instantly, the management team acted fast, and our “stationary guard” was shown the door before he even finished his first shift!

When Cheating Doesn’t Pay Off

Timeshot.io isn’t just about clocking in and out, scanning checkpoints, it’s about seeing the whole story, and giving reliability and transparency to your client.

If you have guards that think about trying a little “creative” scanning, taking pictures of QR codes, changing the time on their phone, attempting to spoof their locations, then they will be in for a surprise. We have sophisticated technology running in the background that stops this from happening, and you will always get the truth within timeshot.io regardless if the man on patrol tries to cheat the system.

If you want guards who actually guard, we certainly cant help you with that, but we can give you the tools you need to ensure they do!
